Guidelines For Purchasing A Puppy

1. Search out a reputable breeder. A breeder is someone that has taken the time to compete with their dogs in some forum and knows their breed. There are breed clubs in every state, look for them and ask for a list of breeders.

2. A breeder should have some sort of contract protecting you, them, and most of all the dog. The contract should be clear and easy to understand.

3. The contract should guarantee against breed specific health problems.

4. Be leery of breeders willing to sell puppies on full registration to pet homes or who are willing to allow the pet home to breed said dog in the future.

5. Both parents of the puppy should have health clearances such as hips, elbows, eyes; or any other health concerns for the breed. Please note this does not mean that your puppy will not have a problem but it does lessen your chances. Again your puppy should have health guarantees in your contract.

6. If for any reason during the dogs life should you not be able to keep the dog the breed should be willing to take it back.

7. A breeder should be willing to listen and answer and questions or concerns you may have and should have a open door policy.

8. A breeder should ask you lots of questions about your life style. This will help them to place the right puppy in your home. Most breeders will choose the puppy to send home with you based on temperament.

9. A breeder will feel a great responsibility to the puppies they have produced and will do all they can to ensure that the puppy has a full and happy life with you.

10.  Please be leery of breeders who talk poorly about other breeders. This to me has always seemed in poor taste. If they don’t have what you are looking for they can recommend another breeder to you with out bashing others.

11.  Last but certainly not least please research the breed and the breeder. AKC has a website that will give you general information on the breed. You should feel comfortable with the breeder. If things don’t feel right don’t get caught up in the moment. This may not be the right choice for you. A puppy takes a lot of time and energy, please make sure you are ready for that.
