PUPPY MILLS

WHY SHOULD YOU ASK QUESTIONS!

We would like for every person looking to purchase a puppy to look at the photos above and think about where you are about to buy your puppy from. Puppies sold to pet stores, websites with tons of litters of designer puppies, i.e. morkies, yorkie-poos and so forth, or places where you go see puppies but no adult dogs are there are places we would run not walk away from. The photos above where taken after the first raid of this puppy mill took place, so this is cleaned up from what things looked like in the first raid a few days earlier.

We had a huge puppy mill bust in our county last month. Over four hundred dogs where removed. I have rescued dogs for the better part of my life and have seen so many bad things but this was by far the most horrific thing I have ever seen. As a animal lover I am sickened by this kind of treatment of these little guys. Puppy Mills will only end when the public stops buying these dogs. Buy purchasing them the cycle just continues.

Breeders who are doing this for the right reasons never sell their puppies to pet stores, so the public would do well not to ever purchase a puppy from a pet store. These puppies are always from facilities that do not have the dogs best interest at heart. Reputable breeders want to know where their puppies are ending up. When puppies leave a pet store that is not a option. Pet store puppies are cash crops so please don’t support it. You may feel you are rescuing the dog but in fact you are just insuring that the parents and other relatives of said dog will continue to be abused and neglected.

Reputable breeders always do health clearances on the parents of their litters. These clearances vary from breed to breed but are always done. We also will give some kind of health guarantee for genetic disorders for the puppies they sell. Again this will vary from breed to breed. This does not mean that a genetic disorder can’t happen but it sure lowers your chances and is a huge clue to the concern that person has for the dogs. Genetic testing can be costly so puppy mills are sure not going to put that kind of money into their dogs.

Reputable breeders will always take their puppies back should the new home not be able to keep them.  We do this because we want to be sure their puppies are cared for. We want to be sure our puppies do not end up in shelters. Again we have the dogs best interest at heart.

Most reputable breeders will breed one or two different breeds, not five or six, and not every mixed breed known to man. We love our breeds and are looking to breed dogs with the conformation, working temperament, or companion temperament that is our breeds standard. When mixing breeds you have know idea what these dogs will look like as adults or what temperaments or health issues they will have. They will draw from both sides and will end up with whatever they end up with. If you are doing this right you sure aren’t making tons money. Most of what we bring in, in lots of cases more then we bring in, is going into the dogs.

We have had ten of the dogs taken from the puppy mill bust in our area for the last few weeks. The dogs are doing well and are putting on weight. They have been tons of work as they have missed out on so many normal dog things and it is a process to get them used to living a normal life. It breaks my heart to watch them run for the first time in their life, go outside for the first time, be loved on for the first time. They have been so willing to forgive the humans that have been so horrible to them. We could all take a lesson from them I am sure.

Many of the dogs removed have serious health issues. Many of the puppies have huge health issues. The vet bills are over whelming. Many of them had parasites that are transferable to people or your kids. Many dogs get these kind of parasites but left untreated can be deadly to the dogs and increase the risk of people picking them up. Again purchasing a dog from a place like this in most cases will end up costing you a arm and a leg. Please, please do research. Go to AKC’s website and look up breeds and then go to breed clubs in your area to find a reputable breeder. We the public are the only ones who have the power to stop puppy mills. As long as these people can make money with what they consider a cash crop then this horrific treatment of these animals will continue. Below is photo of how cute these puppies look cleaned up. We want you to be aware that how they look cleaned up in not a good indication of anything. They are cute there is no doubt. However that doesn’t mean anything about what they came out of. Looks can be deceiving. These guys deserve happy lives and when this is over with they will be placed into loving homes but they should have never had to go through what they went through to begin with.
