Autism effects 1 in 150 children. We would like the world to understand that autism is a spectrum disorder that effects each person differently. Autism has faces like those on this page. Our two boys could not be more different if they tried. Our oldest son never stops talking, while our youngest says very little. Our oldest son can’t deal with the smallest of changes where as our youngest rolls with the punch’s. There are tons of other differences however they share one very important aspect of this neurological condition. It is widely misunderstood and horribly under funded. It effects children from all walks of life, from all backgrounds. Children in upper-class homes to children in the foster care system. It is more prevalent in children then diabetes, cancer, and aids combined. Parents concerns when re-laid to doctors are often dismissed. Diagnosis is often given later then it should be. Early intervention is key to helping our kids develop the tools they will need throughout their lives. Many early intervention therapies are not coved by insurance in many states, Washington being one of the uncovered states, this is not expectable. Funding for schools to deal with this is not even close to what they need. The foster care system is also ill-equipped to deal with these kids, often putting them in homes with people who do not understand what they are getting into and ending up in over their heads without understanding from the state who is not addressing this problem fast enough. Please understand that we love our kids and would not trade them for the world. They are wonderful, loving, and very special kids who deserve every good thing this life has to offer them. They experience happiness, sadness, and frustration just like the rest of us. Please be aware of autism in your community. Please be aware of its emotional and financial effects on families. Please keep these children in your hearts and thoughts. Please be aware of the symptoms so if it comes up in your life you will be on top of it fast to better help the child that you love. Thank you for taking the time to read about this very important issue.
